Twelve million people can’t be wrong, now can they? Well, that’s precisely how many copies Mississippi-based rock band 3 Doors Down sold of their first two albums. And the band’s latest, Seventeen Days, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, selling 200,000 units almost immediately. This is an American band that is embraced by America, even if it’s not embraced by most of America’s music writers.
From Escatawpa, Mississippi, 3 Doors Down is one of the most successful bands in recent years. They seek audience though two different arenas: their debut album The Better Life was a straight ahead rocker and the hit "Kryptonite" directed their way to fame; however, their second album Away From The Sun was no longer just southern rock, but mixed with ample guitar licks and blended occasionally with a heartfelt ballad. And in their third studio album Seventeen Daystime, they seem to have managed to bring together both.
1. Right Where I Belong, a riff heavy rocker with happy tone. Sounds faster and more furious than much of what the band has recorded.
2. It's Not Me, the best track in the album.
3. Let Me Go, a standard love song, clean guitars, catchy melody, big, fat, dirty guitar driven hooky chorus which is already blowing up the radio charts.
4. Be Somebody, soulful and plaintive. A beautifully written track, and accompanied perfectly by Brad Arnold’s unmistakable voice.
5. Landing in London, featuring another middle-of-the-road icon, Bob Seger. The proverbial band-on-the-road song that deals with loneliness and the grind of travelling all over the world, waking up in a new city every day.
6. The Real Life, another formulaic song reminiscent of their 2000 hit, “Loser”
7. Behind Those Eyes, another guitar based ballads.
8. Never Will I Break, starts with 3 Doors Down's signature guitar sound and makes way for a bluesly rocker that lifts the temperament of this album.
9. Father's Son, a morality tale in more quiet/loud dynamics,
10. Live for Today, pretty standard versesbut with a Arnold and Cornell's sudden breakout in the choruses like screams, making this a definitely highlight of the album where the band step outside of the box.
11. My World
12. Here By Me, a beautiful but forgettable ballad
Overall, 3 Doors Down have hit on a formula that works very well for them. It's a great framework for Brad Arnold's earnest......
