I recently was in the area where the story takes place, it took on a special meaning for me. Great insight into Chinese thinking especially during the Cultural Revolution. A sad love story.

the book is slow-paced, and before you know it you've spent hours immersed in somebody's life. the cultural revolution is just a background to much more intruiguing events and relationships.
