Reflection of the Past

Irsis(Hangzhou)

I'm not a new-album or new-band sensitive person. I usually not buy a band's first album until I had their third or fourth and then decide "I want to find out what their music sounds like some years ago". However, it's not the case with Backstreet Boys. I'm the first one in my whole school to possess their first album "Backstreet Boys", it's Nov. 1996 (I remember it's not available in the US until 1997). At that time, my brother happened to be living in the UK, and as a routine, (which still is a routine now) I browsed though a CD catelogue and decided what album I wanted him to buy for me. This one is on the list. At that time, I didn't see their CD cover, not even the songs' titles, all info I got was their name. And needless to mention, I loved it.

So you can imagine what Backstreet Boys meant to me. In 1996 I was just a little girl with some dreams about outer space adventures, and now after five-year's absense they released their fourth studio album, almost nine years have passed, I'll soon enter college and begin my new life. So it's fair to say that BSB watched me grow, in all these years, I've experienced love that is "Larger Than Life" and did all the crazy things in the name of it "As Long As You Love Me" and chose a subject I'm not at all interested because "I Want It That Way" and received "The Call" telling me I failed the exam. I always feel BSB has watched every step of mine, has witnessed my change as well as I witnessed theirs. Now whenever a play a BSB track, it's no longer just a song any more, it carries a part of my memory and memory is build up with my emotion.

So when I had this "Never Gone" in my hands after five years of waiting, my heart is beating like mad. Of course I've heard the single "Incomplete" for almost a thousand times, but I'm never bored with it. I also have watched several performances of this song on American Idol, they were great but I just don't think anyone can take place of BSB's perfect harmonic. And the title track "Never Gone", which is a tribute to the death of Kevin's father carries a simple yet touching melody. Written by Kevin Richardson, Gary Baker and Steve Diamond, it's one of my favorite track in this album. Max Martin, who wrote all the great pop songs including those famous ones of Britney Spears's and N'Sync's worked with BSB on "Just Want You To Know", I would say it's as amazing as the other ...... full review
