Mariah Carey, the mutimillion-album-sold artist, perhaps the greatest female musician of our time (negociable;) her 8th album sold reasonablly well. Many critics believe this album marked her return and I agree with this saying in some way.
You stand in a record store and probably it's in the "Today's Hit" shelf. So seeing the Beyonce-like cover, probably you'll pick it up and read "The Emancipation Of Mimi". Of course Mimi is Mariah, and in case you didn't know what "emancipation" means, Mariah helpfully provides a dictionary definition of the word in the opening pages of the liner notes: it means "to free from restraint, control, oppression, or the power of another" or "to free from any controlling influence" or "to free somebody from restrictions or conventions."
This album showed most things you can get though R&B and Mariah surely tried alternatives. Let's start from the beginning.
Personally I love the first tracks "It's Like That" best. The second one "We Belong Together", which claims to be one of the best love songs ever is not really my appeal, but it's okay. As for the following "Shake It Off" and James Poyser's "Mine Again", Mariah certainly presented us with her perfect vocal, but well, to tell the truth, "Shake It Off" is boring and "Mine Again" is like the usual 80’s-ish stuff sang in American Idol. Followed with "Say Somethin'" featuring Snoop Dogg. This one is a total failure as far as I'm concerned. Snoop Dogg is cool and Mariah Carey is hot, that's true, but for some reason I just don't like this song. "Stay The Night" is a song that I don't want to listen for a second time. However, the song followed "Get Your Number" is cute, Feat. Jermaine Dupri it's one of the Top 3 songs in the album. "One & Only" is just as great, the mid-tempo, the ballads, the tune, the rap part, Mariah's vocal, everything is perfect. "Circles", simple name, the simpliest, most ordinary song of this "I dont' think I can make it without you" kind. "Your Girl" is just as girlish as the title shows, the sexy tone, the soft vocal makes it like a "please make love to me" song. "I Wish You Know" is as girlish (isn't the same with all her songs?) but it's mixed so perfectly, smooth, soft and touching, somehow I think this is the kind of song makes Mariah No.1 female musician. The only thing I'm wondering about the next song "To the Floor" is how much exactly ......
