a review of A Christmas Carol (Bantam Classic)

Christmas Carol is a horrible book that tells about three ghosts that live in the past, present and future. You will never ever get what he is trying to say. His little sister Fan, what's this character about?? It's so confusing.

It's possible you don't understand the conditions under which the book was written. Dickens's writing is typical of the time period, with people over-exercizing their verbosity and with ten words replacing two. Language today is as clean and concise as it has ever been, which makes it more difficult for some people to read older literature. I, for one, had a lot of difficulty with my first 19th century novel, I forget which, but after a while, you learn how to read books like this. If you had trouble with this, Shakespeare would be murder.
