Subtle Surprise

Review: Dolores Claiborne

Even though I love King, I didn't think I'd like this book. The name just sounds too "Aunt May" to me. As a matter of fact, in the load of books I bought at the second-hand store, I left this one for last.

King does a great job here. There are many sub-plots with a depth that is brimming - I asked myself "hmmmm...will this be the start of another short story down the road?" many times.

But of course we are all familiar with King tying together people places and things of stories, (like Mr. Koontz has a way of doing as well - I love this aspect of both their writings), however without giving too much away, i will say that this is not the neighborhoods we are use to being tied together in King's works.
This ties together many other little short stories that I had read as well.

Although King puts you in the mind of the main character most of the time, there are still surprises we find with this character - things we though we knew about them, but later find a certain play on words, or an alternate meaning, etc...Very nice indeed.

Ma, I'm stuck in a well ;)

A Saga Begins

Review: Mystic Rebel

In a frozen land of ancient mysteries, a mighty hero is born... Bart Lasker, an American soldier of fortune pilot, is seeking one last mission so he can retire and start his own air cargo business. However his last mission is to fly into Chinese controlled Tibet and make a delivery to an insurgency group. From the start everything seems to go wrong and Lasker finds himself stranded in the snow-capped mountains of Tibet with no means of escape. Thus begins Bart Lasker’s fantasy adventure... Age-old Tibetan prophesies come to pass and as legend has it, a fearless avenger from out of the west will be transformed from mortal man to...the Mystic Rebel. The first exciting page-turning novel in the Mystic Rebel saga.

Funny and Infomative

Review: Notes from an Even Smaller Island

Read this book during my first few months in Singapore. Loved it. I now live in the same block where the author lived (not on purpose), saw him at the train station once (he still lives pretty close by), and exchanged emails with him a few times.

I absolutely love the book, and am thoroughly thankful he wrote it.

Aside from being informative, it's funny as hell!
