Review: Ghosts of 42nd Street

If you are interested in the history of New York City, and the theater, this makes for a pretty good read. Though the focus serves him well in earlier chapters, once the author enters the 80's and begins to concern himself with the revival of the area, he is a little constrained by his insistence on making the book about 42nd Street rather than the Times Square area. His concentration on Playwrights Horizons as the ultimate catalyst for resurgence seems a litle forced, but it serves as a refreshing contrast to the prevailing wisdom that Disney Corporation money and Giuliani intimidation were the sole factors in rescuing the New York theater district.
