I'm a converted Catholic so I have had to learn it all by choice, not by absorbing it thru the air like so many cradle Catholics. I just love the quote because this is a close Irish family but since tough times have come to them personally they tried to escape 'em by emigration. Only to have to turn around and go back! then since this kid is left to fend for himself in Irish school-Ruled by the church at the time, as was the country-since he'd not learned his faith yet he was just muddlin' along as best he could. It's all so very like trying to learn song lyrics by just hearing in a few times on the radio. So it's not just a church thing, it's also a social and historical link to life in Ireland then.
