people who:

1. Are not black
2. Listen to jazz, but do not themselves play it
3. Are not either serious poseurs nor assholes

?

Discuss.

Oh, and as a side comment, I have to confess to a horrible, horrible guilty pleasure:

I like the song "100 Years" by Five For Fighting. OMG, I'm such a poseur.

Carry on.

Of course there are. Now, admittedly, we may not know too many of them. Jazz lost it's counterculture edge decades ago, and it's not as vibrant of a scene as the rock/electronica/hip-hop big mess of pop culture.

But there will always be people like my granddad, who grew up listening to jazz and still have their old 78s that they listen to. People who are under the age of 50 and dig jazz were probably raised with it, or just have some natural affinity for jazz. Or, they could just be poseurs trying to be cooler than thou through anachronism instead of obscurity.

I don't think being black has much to do with it, except for some poseurs who may think it's "part of their culture" and the black kids out there who were just raised with jazz because their parents or grandparents actually were more likely to be part of the culture.

Also... Five For Fighting?

Dude.

I guess it is better than shouting out a love for Five Iron Frenzy (which is the band I thought you meant at first).

Oh, Five Iron Frenzy is next on my list. It's all downhill from here.

I guess I just sadly don't know anyone who fits all of my criteria, there. I mean, I know black people who aren't assholes and like jazz. I know white people who aren't assholes and like jazz, but also _play_ jazz. Most people I've met our age who claim to like jazz who aren't black and don't play it (and, I suppose, are part of our generation) are generally either Extreme Poseurs or kinda ... dicks. Must just be my rotten luck.

Yeah. I just can't think of anyone off the top of my head who's really into jazz. Oh well, I guess that's what happens when something becomes a niche scene. The sort of people who seek uncommon tastes tend to be, well, kinda dicks.

Same deal with all the people who complain about hipsters and scenesters.

Stupid hipsters and scenesters. Stay off my lawn!

I uh... feel i fit those 3 axioms... what do you think, eric?

Hey, all it takes is one counter-example. Apparently, the answer to my first post's question is Yes.
