(Asheville, The Sea) Books are personal which means that giving them can be risky, but I love to give people books as gifts. I like the inscribing the front to people, and I like try to figure out which book which person would enjoy.
I have one book that is my standard gift, especially if I don't know the person all that well. That book is Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. It is whimsical and poetic. Basically Lightman supposes one day Einstein goes to sleep and dreams about time and relativity. Smart and interesting stuff. Easy to read. Short chapters. A nice small gift size for a book (read not that expensive). Good title. And there is nothing that could really offend anybody in it.
Of course with closer friends, I either give them books they tell me they want or take the easy way out and just give them a gift card to a bookstore.
On a side note, last Christmas my older sister, knowing I loved books gave me a sizable Amazon gift card. I bought two pairs of Puma shoes. And she thought I would be making myself smarter.

(Bay Area)I usually give friends books I've read and liked, which means old books but they're worth just as much as new books to me. :)
